Oxnard, California's Oh No is a forceful emcee and exploratory beatmaker with an extensive discography of both vocal and instrumental hip-hop albums. While he shares his older brother Madlib's penchant for deep cratedigging and constructing music from a wide range of genres, Oh No's work is often less abstract and more accessible. He often focuses albums on specific sample sources, including Galt MacDermot (2006's Exodus into Unheard Rhythms), Mediterranean psych-funk (2007's Dr. No's Oxperiment), and Rudy Ray Moore's Dolomite soundtracks (2012's Ohnomite). Oh No is half of the duo Gangrene with lauded producer/rapper the Alchemist, and he released an album with Madlib, as the Professionals, in 2020. His other collaborative efforts include releases with Prince Po, Blu, and Tha God Fahim. He deconstructed the music of Roy Ayers on 2023's Good Vibes/Bad Vibes, and issued the fourth Gangrene album, Heads I Win, Tails You Lose, in 2024.

Ohnomite
A prolific producer/emcee from Oxnard, Calif., Oh No is best known for his long and fruitful association with indie-rap mainstays Stones Throw Records, also home to his brother Madlib. His first solo album (the excellent and totally underrated The Disrupt) dropped back in 2004, followed by the all–Galt MacDermot sample-based Exodus into Unheard Rhythms. Then it was Dr. No's Oxperiment and Dr. No's Ethiopium, both of which showcased his prowess at chopping and reshaping international funk and psych music. More recently, he's been doing the excellent Gangrene project with The Alchemist. Yet on Ohnomite, he enlists an all-star crew of guest emcees—young and old, big and small, east and west—to go off with him over his finely chopped, consistently freaky productions. Subterranean favorites like MF DOOM ("3 Dollars") and Roc Marciano ("The Hitmen") make appearances, as do old-school legends like Phife Dawg ("Dues 'n' Don'ts") and Erick Sermon ("Runnin' the Show"). We also get several great instrumental interludes, most notably "Ohnomite Jazz" and "Piano." It's another impressive effort from one of hip-hop's most constantly compelling artists.

Dr. No’s Ethiopium
Funky hip-hop hippie Oh No carves up ‘60s and ‘70s records from Ethiopia on this 36-track instrumental beat tape, which plays like a spiritual voyage through the East African country. By cutting up his sounds into choppy boom-bap vignettes, the California producer explores Ethiopia’s rich history of soul, jazz, and R&B with the snazzy wah-wah guitar licks of “The Funk,” the brash brass of “Butta,” and the more tweaked-out electronic flavors of “Midnight Missions.”

Dr. No's Kali Tornado Funk
A music/film/comedy icon, the late Rudy Ray Moore (a.k.a. Dolemite) has been sampled countless times by everybody from 2 Live Crew and Schoolly D to Snoop and Dr. Dre. Cali producer Oh No raided the vaults for last year's exceptional OhNoMite project, but he had so much dope material left over that he had to drop a whole 'nother record. Whereas the first one featured a gigantic roster of guest emcees, Tornado Funk is mostly all instrumentals, overflowing with funk through its 36 tracks. Like his brother Madlib, Oh No is a genius at concocting short but sweet, smoke-friendly weirdo beats, and this is certainly no exception. Loaded with smooth bass lines, wah-wah guitars, slick drums, horn licks, and freaky keys, this is music custom-made for just bugging out at home. Like his older brother Madlib, Stones Throw producer/emcee Oh No has a tireless work ethic and a knack for twisted yet highly charismatic sample-drenched beatscapes and bugged-out concept albums. In the past two years, he's dropped an avalanche of new material, including OhNoMite, Dr. No's Kali Tornado Funk, Ashes with Chris Keyes, and Vodka & Ayahuasca with The Alchemist. On Disrupted Ads, he draws inspiration from vintage misleading newspaper advertisements that promise one thing while delivering another. About half instrumentals and half rap joints, this set gives mic time to a bevy of underground favorites (Declaime, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Chali 2Na, MED, Souls of Mischief, Psalm One, and more) while serving up freaky beats aplenty throughout. Don't sleep on "Drifters," "The Difference," "Improvement," and "Punchdrunkpatterns."
