Trevor Daniel

Artist ∙ Pop

“It’s just a constant stream of good news,” gushed Trevor Daniel to Apple Music in December of 2019. The Up Next artist had reason to be happy: His single “Falling” was going viral on social media a full year after its release—a fitting accomplishment for the inaugural signee to Taz Taylor’s Internet Money Records. Born in Los Angeles in 1994, the Houston-based singer/songwriter started making music as a teenager and uploading songs a few years later. In 2017, he released his debut single, “Youth,” and began honing his sound: a moody, reverb-soaked take on the sad rap and R&B pioneered by Drake, Kanye West, and Kid Cudi and fleshed out with the delicate synth detailing of UK electronic. “Falling” established the essence of his style: woozy synths, an unforgettable hook, and broad-brush lyrics that can resonate with anyone who has ever loved, lost, and dared to love again. Then there’s Daniel’s voice, a resilient alto that effortlessly slips between murmured R&B cadences and emo’s drawn-out yelp. On his 2020 debut album, Nicotine, Daniel kept refining both his voice and his unusual R&B/alt-rock fusion, painting with brighter colors on “Nicotine” and then nodding to ’80s post-punk on “Lovesick,” all over a stark foundation of 808 trap beats. As Daniel tells Apple Music, while social media catches up to him, he’s one step ahead of the game. “I know I’ve gotten better, and I’m going to keep getting better,” he says. “So if they like something from a year ago, that’s very reassuring for the new project.”
