ALL ABOUT LUV

ALL ABOUT LUV is a momentum shift for the South Korean EDM/rap/pop group, who has released some of K-pop’s most enthralling numbers (“Shoot Out,” “Hero,” “Follow,” “Alligator”). For their first all-English-language album, MONSTA X embraced a smooth Western pop style that fits them like a summer suit—stylish and modern but not too dressy.

According to lead rapper I.M, they wanted to make their message of love accessible to more people during turbulent times. “There are a lot of ways to express love,” I.M tells Apple Music. “I think love is really hard to define. I think love is the best thing to do [for] humanity. That’s why we named it ALL ABOUT LUV.”

The album unfolds like 11 crush notes, showing love’s highs, lows, and complexities. It’s softly lit, both in wattage and mood. The vocal unit carries the bag on ballads like “SOMEONE’S SOMEONE,” “YOU CAN’T HOLD MY HEART,” and “SHE’S THE ONE.” The rap unit gets busy on upbeat tracks like “MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT” and with collaborators Pitbull (“BESIDE U”) and French Montana (“WHO DO U LOVE?”). will.i.am adds a remix, as well. There’s also a sexual awakening in a few of the tracks. “GOT MY NUMBER” is a thirst tweet set to melodic EDM pop. “MISBEHAVE” is a ballad detailing make-up whoopee and drunken naked romps around the hotel pool. MONSTA X are K-pop innovators, and ALL ABOUT LUV signals the group’s confident arrival into the global pop conversation. “I want to communicate with more US fans,” lead vocalist Kihyun tells Apple Music. “The best language is music.”

FOLLOW - FIND YOU

With sleek ballads, trap-influenced stompers, breathtaking choreo, and an openness to outside collaboration—MONSTA X has proved they are one of K-pop’s most versatile idol groups. The eight-track mini album FOLLOW – FIND YOU is another showcase of the boy band’s explosive power and deep passion. Throughout, Shownu and Kihyun’s sweet high notes counterbalance Jooheon and I.M’s assertive raps. “Burn it up” exemplifies what MONSTA X does so well, generating palpable drama with faraway bells and crunk-style synths then building up to a singable, danceable maelstrom. Ballads “Find you” and “U R” are rendered with swooning sensitivity, and “Mirror” reveals vulnerable lines like “I hate myself when I look through to the mirror” and “I’m sick of my hysteria.” The week of the mini album’s release, vocalist/dancer Wonho announced his departure from the group; heartbroken Monbebes will likely flock to the touching closer “See You Again” for comfort.

FANTASIA X

In 2020, MONSTA X entered the mainstream pop conversation with its all-English-language ballads album ALL ABOUT LUV. Just three months later, the group exits the tunnel of LUV and boards the FANTASIA thrill ride. Their eighth mini-album is full of lyrical twists and EDM drops, beginning with the title track. The rap line springs to life on “ZONE,” while club culture courses through “Chaotic” and “IT AIN’T OVER.” Yet there’s more to FANTASIA X than big-tent kicks. “FLOW” invokes Bruce Lee’s “be water” ethos in its call for courage in the face of hardship. And “Stand Up” doubles as a celebratory summer anthem and call for comfort to those affected by COVID-19.

REASON - EP

On their 12th mini-album, and first comeback since renewing their contract with K-pop entertainment company Starship, MONSTA X has set out to detail the “reason” behind their endurance and enviable connection as a group. (They’ve been together for almost a decade now, after all, first forming on the reality survival show NO.MERCY in 2014.) The group once best known for their hip-hop hustle and EDM-pop drops has continued to evolve on REASON. All six tracks are meant to highlight the band’s range. There’s the anthemic arena rock of “Beautiful Liar” (an ode to Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “A Beautiful Lie,” maybe?) and the sexy bass-heavy ballad “Daydream,” which gives way to the space-cowboy production of “LONE RANGER” and R&B slow-burn “Deny.” (The latter two were produced by member I.M.) As the world continues to learn, and MONBEBE has always known, MONSTA X will continue to push the boundaries of K-pop storytelling—as long as you’ll have them.
