Kai Winding

Artist ∙ Jazz

Kai Winding’s family relocated from Denmark to America in 1934 and soon thereafter began teaching himself to play trombone. In the late '30s and early '40s he played with a number of big bands including Sonny Dunham and Alvino Rey’s. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during the war, he played in Benny Goodman’s mid '40s bebop-influenced band and in 1946 joined Stan Kenton. He subsequently played with Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, appearing on the monumental BIRTH OF THE COOL. In the late '50s Winding toured with his own bands, including a four-trombone and rhythm line up. In the '70s he was leader, co-leader or sideman in various groups, including the Giants of Jazz with Dizzy Gillespie, Giant Bones with Curtis Fuller, and the Lionel Hampton All-Star Big Band.
