Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra

Artist ∙ Classical

The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra has survived the tumultuous changes that have beset its city and its homeland, emerging changed, but with its essential values intact.
Until 1939 the orchestra's hall was one of Poland's cultural centers, and it played host to world-class soloists. During World War II its building was destroyed and half of its members were killed. It returned to regular concertizing in the 1947-48 season. Longtime director Witold Rowicki gave the orchestra its modern configuration of 112 musicians, with an associated choir of 100. Under Antoni Wit (2001-2013) and Jacek Kaspszyk, the Philharmonic has maintained its status while branching out into new activities. It has toured on five continents and recorded neglected Polish music and anime and video game soundtracks. ~ James Manheim
