Since the late ’80s, Trent Reznor has been the frontman of and main creative musical force behind industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.

∙ Atticus Ross started his career in the ’90s by programming beats for Bomb the Bass and ex-Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds member Barry Adamson.
∙ Ross contributed production and other musical support to Nine Inch Nails albums, beginning with 2005’s With Teeth, before officially joining the band in 2016.
∙ Reznor and Ross won a Best Original Score Academy Award for 2010’s The Social Network.
∙ The duo won a Grammy Award (Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media) for the 2011 film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
∙ In addition to scoring the acclaimed TV series Watchmen, they have collaborated on music for such films as Mid90s, Bird Box, and Gone Girl.

With their stark single-note piano theme, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross found a sound that mirrors the roiling emotions lying just beyond the cerebral tensions of The Social Network. The percolating techno track “In Motion” conveys the programming obsessions and vertiginous success of a tech company, while the throbbing and abrasive “A Familiar Taste” channels underlying urges of greed, corruption, and selfishness. The duo’s unnerving balance of delicateness and animosity is best experienced on the frighteningly sleek interpretation of Wagner’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

Comprised of synth washes and lonely pianos, ominous chords and angry squelches, these pieces express the aura of dread and confusion that haunts the film. Like their score for The Social Network, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Patriots Day soundtrack is a dark affair. On “Them and Us,” drums and guitar slowly build to a shuddering climax of swirling feedback, while the drones and arpeggios of “The Place You Are Right Now” suggest an anxiety-ridden approximation of trance music. But they can be gentle, too: In “We Forget Who We Are,” a contemplative piano melody quietly rises above hopeful strings—the acoustic silver lining to a heavy electronic cloud.
