Hip-hop producer Knxwledge has lent his versatile beats to artists like Kendrick Lamar and Joey Bada$$ and earned critical raves as one-half of the funk-soul duo NxWorries, alongside singer-rapper Anderson .Paak.

• Knxwledge grew up playing instruments in church, listening to hip-hop on the radio, and absorbing the music of legendary Detroit producer J. Dilla.
• He coproduced “Momma” for Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly.
• In 2016, Knxwledge and Anderson .Paak showcased their chemistry on Yes Lawd!, the debut album by their duo NxWorries.
• Knxwledge’s 2020 album 1988—his second LP for the venerable hip-hop label Stones Throw—is 38 minutes of cleansing gospel, groovy slow jams, soulful ballads, and snippets of interviews and conversations.

Why Lawd?
Though NxWorries—the duo of Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge—took eight years between their first and second albums, the sound remains perfectly the same. On Why Lawd?, the producer from New Jersey uses his backpacking past to conjure up dusty grooves that serve as the perfect counterpoint to .Paak’s silky-smooth voice.

On “Distractions,” Knx cues up Spanish-inspired guitar and echoing drum clicks to give .Paak the perfect stage from which he can sing of long nights and beautiful days: “I don’t need no more distractions, but I’m gassed to see what might happen.” It’s an album of impeccable textures and an ode to the “you only live once” mindset. “SheUsed” is a throwback gospel track with soaring vocal harmonies that finds .Paak unearthing his scratchy falsetto. “Said I’ll be back but won’t be mad if this time is the last,” he raps after multiple innuendo-laced bars. It’s all good, though. Why Lawd? is what happens when two of the game’s best link up in the pursuit of pure hedonistic joy.

LA producer/songwriter Glen Boothe’s second album as Knxwledge for the venerated Stones Throw label is the kind of thing you put on, let run, and don’t think much about until you reach up to play it again—and again, and, yeah, all right, why not, again. Fragmented as it is (most of these tracks are under two minutes), the overall feel is smooth and narrative, each moment like an interlude hinged to an interlude, an association to an association. The gospel of “do you” leads into the more carnal slow-jam pleasures of “Thats Allwekando.,” and “Listen” into “Learn,” with bits of conversation and interview samples playing like a meta-commentary on what you’ve just heard or are about to hear. Boothe is funny like that, and clever. And, as a guy raised in the Pentecostal church but saved by rap tapes, a little conflicted, mixing up the sacred and profane impulses of R&B and hip-hop in ways that, like all great beatmakers, use bits and pieces of other people’s work to lay bare a journey that feels deeply personal. Come to think, there’s a word for this: flow.
