Friedrich von Flotow

Artist ∙ Classical

Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) was one of the most significant German opera composers between Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. He is remembered most for his opera Martha, which remained in the standard repertoire until early in the 20th century. The only other opera of his to continue to be revived occasionally is Alessandro Stradella, based on the life of the Baroque composer and singer. Flotow's music is tuneful and light, and often ill-suited to the serious topics he chose for his other operas, which have fallen into obscurity. Other works include songs, chamber music, and two piano concertos.
