Du Yun

Artist ∙ Classical

The music of Du Yun includes aspects of "orchestral [music], opera, chamber music, theater, cabaret, pop music, oral tradition, visual arts, electronics, and noise." She also does not readily conform to such descriptions as Chinese or American.
Du's musical education coincided with the rebuilding of Western-influenced institutions in China after the end of the Cultural Revolution. A second major set of influences came when China opened itself to Western popular culture in the 1990s. When Du moved to the U.S., she developed a style that was eclectic. Her music runs the gamut from traditional instrumental genres and opera to popular song, electronics, performance art and collaboration with visual artists, and more. She won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for her opera Angel's Bone. ~ James Manheim
