Immortal Technique

Artist ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap

Rapper Immortal Technique bum-rushed the hip-hop scene in the 2000s with a militant message and an equally abrasive delivery.

• Born in a Peruvian military hospital, he moved with his family to New York City in the early 1980s, settling in Harlem.
• By 2000, Immortal Technique had become a fixture in New York’s battle-rap circuit. He garnered label interest but refused to soften his style for commercial appeal.
• He self-released his debut album, Revolutionary, Vol. 1, in 2001. A sequel followed in 2003.
• In 2005, Immortal Technique teamed up with DJ Green Lantern and Mos Def for the controversial single “Bin Laden,” a scathing indictment of President George W. Bush and the conservative media.
• In 2016, Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda told podcaster Marc Maron that Immortal Technique was his high school bully. Miranda then praised the rapper’s growth and humanitarianism.
• Among his charitable efforts, Immortal Technique helped fund and build the Amin Institute, an orphanage in Afghanistan.
• Since the late 2000s, Immortal Technique has been working on his fourth solo album, The Middle Passage, the follow-up to 2008’s The 3rd World.
