Raise the Roof

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ 2007 collaborative album Raising Sand remains, nearly a decade and a half after its release, a landmark record in roots music. The LP earned Plant, of Led Zeppelin fame, and reigning bluegrass queen Krauss five Grammys at the 2009 ceremony, including the coveted Album of the Year trophy, among many other accolades. The album also offered a new vision for how artists could work within an already nebulous genre, with the two recording favorite songs new and old for a collection that still sounds timeless.

Plant and Krauss reconvene on Raise the Roof, seeming, somehow, to pick right back up where they left off. Still present are the pair’s intimacy, their contrasting but complementary vocal styles, and, notably, the gentle hand of producer T Bone Burnett, who also helmed Raising Sand. While much remains the same, Raise the Roof is a decidedly larger affair than its predecessor, even in its quieter moments, thanks likely to each artist’s growth via work with other projects (Band of Joy and Sensational Space Shifters for Plant; longtime band Union Station for Krauss) in the intervening decade-plus. Covered artists include Calexico (“Quattro [World Drifts In]”), Allen Toussaint (“Trouble With My Lover”), and Merle Haggard (“Going Where the Lonely Go”), with the album’s tracklist revealing a catholic breadth of influences. The duo is backed by some of Nashville’s finest players, including guitarists Buddy Miller and Bill Frisell.

Forget About It

For the first time since 1990, Alison Krauss steps apart from Union Station and gives herself solo billing on Forget About It. Even though most of the members of her longstanding backing band appear on the album, the subtle change in credit is significant. Forget About It moves beyond the bluegrass that Krauss had spent most of her life perfecting and inhabits its own musical niche: a place that retains the emotional honesty of country and bluegrass, but adopts a more delicate, atmospheric musical backdrop. “Never Got Off the Ground” and “Could You Lie” are tinged with just enough dobro and mandolin to keep Krauss connected to her roots, but other songs ascend to a another plane. What really sets Forget About It apart is the writing. Nashville turns out dozens of great songs a year, but by the time they reach radio they are usually buried in layers of flashy instrumentation and overproduction. Krauss strips all that away, and to listen to “Stay,” “Maybe,” and “Ghost in This House” is to be offered the undisturbed essence of each song.

The careful selection of covers on Windy City speaks volumes about Alison Krauss’ inspirations as an artist. Here, she offers a warmly nostalgic musical tour of mid-century Nashville. These are deep cuts—among the Bill Monroe b-sides and obscure bluegrass covers are only a few hits by Glen Campbell and Brenda Lee. But Krauss makes every song sound effortlessly her own, from the string-accompanied heartbreak “Losing You” to the gently swinging twang of “Dream of Me."

I Know Who Holds Tomorrow

For 1994’s I Know Who Holds Tomorrow, Alison Krauss took a break from recording with Union Station and instead collaborated with the Cox Family, a gospel quintet from Cotton Valley, Louisiana. The Coxes are a perfect fit for Krauss’ singular brand of immaculate sacred music, but I Know Who Holds Tomorrow also illuminates unexpected elements of her craft. “Walk Over God’s Heaven,” “Never Will Give Up,” and “Loves Me Like a Rock” are swinging, rotund blues — and surprisingly sexy for a group of singers committed to Christian music. “Where No One Stands Alone,” “Remind Me, Dear Lord,” and “Everybody Wants To Go to Heaven” present a vision of country music that is lighter than air. Imagine Hank Williams if he wore virgin cotton instead of Nudie suits, and imbibed holy water and not whiskey. For those who crave Krauss’ voice in its most ethereal state, “Jewels” is a hymn as fragile, smooth, and carefully crafted as fine porcelain. Rather than simply collect a series of sacred songs, I Know Who Holds Tomorrow draws out in understated ways the unheard aspects of Krauss’ music.
