High Contrast

Artist ∙ Dance

Drum 'n' bass can be a hermetic scene, but High Contrast (born Lincoln Barrett in 1979) has set his sights on broader horizons. While the Cardiff, Wales, native got his start on the iconic Hospital Records, he’s no stranger to the wider world of pop and electronic music. He has remixed EDM heavyweights like Axwell and Tiësto as well as Kanye, The White Stripes, 2Pac, and even Stevie Nicks. Early records like his 2002 debut, True Colours, and 2004’s High Society are grounded in rolling breaks and mammoth sub-bass, but on later albums, his ear for a tuneful hook has led him to fresh terrain, whether the half-time rock drums on 2012’s The Agony & The Ecstasy or the silky disco grooves of 2017’s Night Gallery. Despite his experimental instincts, High Contrast has never forgotten his roots: His 2020 album, Notes From The Underground, is a joyful tribute to old-school jungle, in all its ragged glory.
