CYRIL

Artist ∙ Dance

With his trademark bucket hats never far out of reach, DJ/producer Cyril Riley has proven just how adeptly he can transform nostalgic artifacts into fun new playthings. Born in 1997 in New South Wales before relocating to Darwin, CYRIL struck gold (and multiplatinum) with a smash 2023 remix of “Stumblin’ In,” a 1978 soft-rock duet between Chris Norman and Suzi Quatro. That viral success was no fluke, nor was the producer’s ability to bottle exactly what made an old song so appealing in the first place. He worked similar magic helming Dean Lewis’ affecting cover of Crowded House’s “Fall at Your Feet” and enlisting Kita Alexander to reimagine Spandau Ballet’s synth-pop ballad “True” on 2024’s themed EP From Down Under. True to its title, the companion EP To the World took its source material from the rest of the globe, whether it be America’s “A Horse With No Name” or Disturbed’s ferocious overhaul of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” If the idea of turning soothing folk songs into dance-floor bangers seems counterintuitive, that’s the very genius of CYRIL.
