Flores - EP

“After all the flights and all the shows that we had, we really didn't have time to work on new music,” Marca MP singer Chato tells Apple Music. Then came the pandemic, which effectively grounded the regional Mexican rising stars amid a spate of sold-out concerts in the wake of “El Güero,” their biggest hit to date. “We were a group that would play backyard parties, birthdays, quinceañeras. To play a club for 1,000 people and you sell it out, literally nothing compares to what you used to do.” With everything else on hold, Chato began to craft the new material which this EP comprises. “I was just home and I'm the one that writes all the music for the group, and so I just started writing.” Diverging from the approach of No Me Quejo, a corridor-centric effort released just months earlier, Flores basks in the timelessness of romantic love. “I would see on my social media, like, 'Hey, when is Chato going to start writing new songs?'” he explains of the decision to drop the EP so soon after the album. “If they're slapping your music but they want new music, you got to give the fans what they want.” Here Chato tells the stories behind each of the EP's songs.

Tal Vez
“‘El Güero’ boosted up a lot of our popularity, and we're here trying to do the same with this release, or, if possible, go higher. 'Tal Vez' is about meeting a girl—right from the moment you see her, people tell that girl stuff about you, maybe stuff that might not be true, but you're there for her. You want to give her your love and you just can't prevent from showing it anymore. Basically, that's kind of the whole template of the song. That was written while we were in quarantine.”

Ven Conmigo
“It talks about teenage love. You’re on social media, you see this girl's pictures, and you've been trying to follow her for a long time. You're trying to convince that girl to come with you. You're telling her that you can be good for her, that you can make her happy and do things for her. That's basically what it’s about, to be your girlfriend.”

Qué Fue Lo Que Pasó
“This one was mostly to balance out the project. Because let's say we released all love songs, people would be like, 'Come on. I want to get in my feels.' But at the same time, it did happen, it was the way that I was feeling. That song talks about the whole relationship, how both persons started falling in love. The second part of the song is about like her jealousy ending everything because of everything that's going on. What happened to the love that you said you had?”

“This one has basically the same structure of ‘Ven Conmigo.’ But in this one I try to switch it up a bit, make it a little bit more broad to try to reach more audiences. It talks about telling the girl, like, ‘Don't be like that, give me a chance.’ Then it talks about how you were in the beginning, and then things happened—you started falling in love. ‘Your kisses make me happy.’ After everything that happened, she's the one that makes you happy.”

“On our first album, we had released a slow song like that, and thankfully people really, really, really appreciated it. It has more than five million views. For me, for a song like that and to have that type of tone—so slow—and to have that type of response, for me, it was good. For this, I wanted to make another one that has the same vibe.”

For música Mexicana stars Marca MP, forward momentum is key to success. Their progressive hitmaking streak met with tragedy when frontman Chato was in a car accident that left him unable to walk for some time. Though the road to recovery included its share of setbacks, he persevered and set the group back on track with 2021’s DEV, Vol. 2 and this eight-song successor. He addresses the near-death experience and his subsequent takeaways on opener “Pa’ Contarla,” giving thanks to God and revealing disdain for the snakes who showed themselves at his lowest moments. With that behind him, he returns to penning and singing high-quality corridos like “Hombre De Respeto” and “Sigo Al Frente,” songs where one can’t help but see his own lived experiences being mirrored. On the comparatively more spirited “Soy Alegre,” there is a sense of joy in his writing and delivery, a reminder of what can be found on the other side of darkness.

DEV, Vol. 2 - EP

“I see things completely different,” Chato tells Apple Music. Surviving an otherwise deadly car accident in August of 2020, the Marca MP frontman was left with significant injuries that impacted his ability to walk, let alone perform. The harrowing experience and subsequent setbacks put a number of things into perspective for the young singer, whose band was on a tremendous upswing up until that point thanks to the success of the hit single “El Güero” with Grupo Firme and projects like No Me Quejo and Flores. “It motivated me to write from the heart,” he says. “I feel like I'm not the same person I was. Breaking both of your legs, not being able to walk, and being in bed for more than five months, it changes you; you think a lot.” Ultimately, neither broken bones nor lineup changes could keep him from bringing Marca MP back, even while still in recovery. The sequel to one of the group’s best-loved records, DEV, Vol. 2 features a mix of corridos and romanticas that fans have been waiting for, including some previously teased by Chato on social media, and hints at what promises to be a robust year for his music. Check out his thoughts on these five new tracks below.

Bien Me Conoces
“It talks about a love relationship [where] sometimes the girl gets mad at things, or she gets moody at certain stuff that the guy does. But at the end of the day, they both love each other. I feel like some songs, they’re dirty, you can say. And I feel like this, it’s calm, it's respectful, and it's about love.”

Aquí en El Chaleco
“All the other tracks, we've presented them on live on Instagram. But this track, it was completely new. It just came out of the blue. A lot of fans were saying that we were just releasing covers. People were like, 'Hey, this isn't like Marca MP anymore.' This is why we called it Despegando el Vuelo, because the fans said that's the best album. So I was like, why don't we call this Despegando el Vuelo, Vol. 2 with corridos and romanticas that people are going to know that, 'Hey, this is the old Marca MP that I fell in love with.'”

Ya Acabo
“That's the banger. Since the start, since we presented it in September in the little video that we put on Instagram, people were saying that they wanted the track, right off the get-go. That was the first romantic one after the other members had left. I hope that people accept it, because it's a desamor song, but it has that Marca MP touch, and I hope that the fans connect to it a lot.”

Acá en Guanajuato
“That's another corrido that pretty much talks about the narco-territories that are going on right now. I can see it more in my state, because that's where I'm from. I was seeing it, I was hearing about it, and I would put pieces together. I would just be in my room and take out notes.”

Lumbre Al Cigarro
“That's another corrido. It's happy, and it has a lot of verses that people can relate to. We’re blessed enough to say that our songs can go from an eight-year-old singing them to like a 50-year-old singing them. That’s a big factor that has helped us a lot in this whole music industry.”

Brindo

Clocking in at just over an hour, this 19-song effort marks the Modesto, California, group’s lengthiest to date. Coming after a series of mostly EP-length projects and mini-albums, including fan favorites Flores and Seguimos Avanzando, the long-awaited full-length expression of Marca MP’s contemporary música mexicana sound leaves little doubt of their well-deserved standing. Having now survived and recovered from a near-fatal car accident, rejuvenated frontman Chato delivers a healthy mix of corridos and románticas, both as originals as well as momentous covers. There are nods to Grupo Codiciado and Los Tucanes de Tijuana on “Tolin Infante” and a memorable version of the late legend Chalino Sánchez’s “Ya Después De Muerto.” With his own pen, he offers up songs that reflect his growth and depth as a songwriter, including “Como Hueso,” “Tengo Con Que,” and the yearning “Te Quiero.”

Not even two months after dropping the wholly romantic Flores EP, regional Mexican rising stars Marca MP return with a third volume in their Las Preferidas series. In line with the prior installments, the group presents live takes on songs written or popularized by notable acts including Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga, Los Cadetes de Linares, and Los Canelos de Durango. Among the fan favorites selected here, they give norteño icon Ramón Ayala’s existential “Entierrenme Cantando” a suitably somber treatment, while imbuing his “Que Casualidad” with some necessary mirth.

Sold-out concert performances and corresponding live records have garnered this Modesto, California, quartet quite a following. Yet for this full-length effort, Marca MP’s studio prowess becomes immediately apparent over the course of its 13 regional Mexican cuts. Opening corrido “Manuel Me Llamo Yo” tells a first-person tale of hard work and great rewards. That sets the tone for the songs that follow, including “El Pantera” and “El Magnate,” not to mention the riveting account of the album’s title track.

“I tried to make sure that I didn't use the sounds that are on trend,” Marca MP lead vocalist Chato tells Apple Music about LEALTAD. “It costs me so much time and effort and dedication.” Indeed, at a time when artists are tempted to chase fleeting virality, the originality represented by the young Californian música mexicana act’s growing discography offers a sense of permanence. Having broken out in 2019 via some Grupo Firme collaborations, Chato’s project continued to make a name for itself with notable, popular records that seemingly sought to stand the test of time. Even with lineup changes over the years, he’s stayed committed to this artistic vision up to and through this latest effort. “I felt like I was loyal to the sound of what Marca MP is.”

Of the 10 original tracks that make up LEALTAD, seven of them were penned by Chato himself. “There's a song for every occasion,” he says. “There's no songs that are just talking about the same thing.” The variety of the material here, from romantic ballads to rousing corridos, bears the distinct hallmarks of what fans have come to expect from Marca MP. Yet these songs didn’t come with particular ease. For a lengthy period of time, beginning in 2022, he felt creatively blocked, unable to write songs he considered worth recording. Thankfully, he experienced something of a breakthrough in the latter half of 2023. “Before, when I wanted to make a song, I would take a day or two,” he says. “Most of these songs, they were coming out in an hour, an hour and a half.” Below, read an interview with Chato, in which he discusses the making of and motivations behind LEALTAD.

Unlike some of your recent Marca MP projects, LEALTAD has only 10 songs. Was that an intentional choice from the start, to have a tighter project, or did things evolve as you were making the record?

It evolved as I was making the album, to be honest. I wanted it to be more of a EP. On the past albums, I was doing too much. I feel like some songs were not paid too much attention to; they didn't get that recognition that I thought that they were going to get. Little by little, the songs just started piling up.

None of these songs were released as singles prior to LEALTAD’s release. Why did you choose that approach here?

I haven't been that type, to release the single, and then release the other single, and then make it into an album. I feel like that decreases the meaning of an album. Before, I would tease the songs a lot more. Now, I just want the fans to enjoy the drop, enjoy the release, enjoy the songs one by one. And I feel like that's better.

In making LEALTAD, was there any one particular song that opened the floodgates creatively for you?

The first one, which is my favorite, “Tenis Balenciaga.” It was a breakthrough. You know when you see a cloud and it's raining, and then out of nowhere the sun comes out? That's how I felt, the process of making it and then the lyrics and even the production, hearing everything put together. My plan was for maybe five, six songs, and literally I got 10 and it's even better.

Corridos have been a core part of the Marca MP catalog. Is there any one of them that you feel really stands out for you on LEALTAD?

All of the corridos that are on here, I feel like they represent all of Marca MP. But there’s one that personally I didn't like, I didn't even want to release it, “El Joven.” I found it so simple. The guys in the group, they were telling me, “Hey, this song slaps.” But personally, if I don't like my song, I won't put effort or I won't go more forward into it. We recorded it at practice on the phone, and then we would play it in the truck and everyone would be excited. I decided to record it. Because they wanted to. I was like, maybe we can add something different. In the practice, I was playing the guitar, but I was like, what if I hop off the guitar and we just do charchetas and tuba and tololoche? We recorded it like that, and once I heard it, I started liking it. The charchetas fit in perfect.
