Héloïse Werner

Artist ∙ Classical

Héloïse Werner is a composer and soprano—and occasionally cellist and percussionist—whose performances explore the interface of sound, music, and language. Her singing is often accompanied by innovative vocal sounds and percussive effects created with her body. The result is engaging music theater on an intimate scale. Werner was born in Paris in 1991. She took up a choral scholarship at Cambridge in 2010 and has lived in the UK ever since. In 2013, Werner and fellow Cambridge graduates founded The Hermes Experiment, an ensemble of harp, clarinet, voice, and double bass. The group performs a wide range of music, particularly by contemporary and women composers. Werner released her first solo album, Phrases, in 2022. The program includes excerpts from The Other Side of the Sea, her opera for voice and cello; Unspecified Intentions, which she likens to stand-up comedy; and works she has commissioned from leading composers Josephine Stephenson, Nico Muhly, and Oliver Leith.
