Natives of Huntington Beach, California, (hed) P.E. came together in 1994, unified by a desire to mesh Orange County’s skate-punk tradition with the G-Funk era. The result was a hybrid sound characterized by heavy bass grooves, thrash guitar assaults, and party-centered rhymes which the band dubbed “G-Punk.” After an independent EP led to a deal with Jive Records, (hed) P.E.’s self-titled debut was released in 1997. Two more LPs followed on Jive before the band moved to Koch, introducing a measure of politically-fueled outrage on ONLY IN AMERICA (2004) that would grow more prominent in subsequent efforts BACK 2 BASE X (2006) and NEW WORLD ORPHANS (2009).
