For a guy born in 2000, BabyTron knows an astonishing amount of 1990s NBA trivia: “I’m ’90s Jordan, see the so-called MVP in the finals and keep scoring,” he spits on “90’s Bulls” (referring, of course, to Charles Barkley). The Michigan rapper was raised on basketball, cartoons, ’80s pop, and Detroit street rap, which goes a long way in explaining the BabyTron worldview. As a member of the scam rap trio ShittyBoyz, Tron broke through as a meme rapper, and though he’s still got a soft spot for all things sophomoric, his clever punchlines and esoteric references have earned him the right to be taken seriously.

MegaTron 2 is the latest in a two-year stretch of projects that prove BabyTron could rap selections from the phone book and make it sound interesting. (Yes, he’s a zoomer, but anyone with that much intel on ’90s NBA lore surely can scrounge up a phone book.) It’s a 28-track speedrun of freestyled zingers over classic Detroit beats, like the icy “Murder Mitten,” or throwback samples like the inspired Degrees of Motion flip on “Trick or Treat?” The dinners are opulent, the smoke is potent, and the insults are eccentric as ever, including a track dedicated entirely to “yo momma” jokes. (“If you are what you eat, then yo momma’s a sloppy joe.”) And on “Ice Cream,” he rounds up a ragtag gang of merry pranksters (Certified Trapper, Soulja Boy Tell ’Em, Riff Raff, YN Jay) to join him in rapping about hitting deer with his car: real Midwestern hours.

Some dumb rap tries to be smart; BabyTron and his ShittyBoyz trio do the opposite, cloaking serious chops in deadpan humor and abundant references to adolescent stoner TV programs. The erstwhile scam-rapper is a key player in Detroit’s rap renaissance, a comic foil to the city’s icier antiheroes—but 6, his second full-length of 2023, is an opportunity to take Tron seriously. (For one thing, there are hooks on a handful of songs, as opposed to his usual rambling bursts of riffy one-liners.) Over the kind of bouncy, edgy, riding-around-feeling-myself beats that Detroit producers have mastered, Tron sounds like he’s showing off a bit, devising wordplay gauntlets to conquer on “100 Bars” or abruptly cranking up the speed on “Eobard Thawne.”

Case Dismissed

BabyTron, one-third of Detroit rap collective ShittyBoyz, got his case dismissed; if you can’t tell by the hysterical cover art of the MC in his now-famous mugshot, photoshopped with birthday party swag, he won’t be going to jail. That’s the premise of his first project of 2024, the aptly titled Case Dismissed, a playful victory lap that mostly finds the rapper breathing a sigh of relief.

The record plays like a first-day-out mixtape, with Baby going straight from his case hearing to the studio and cueing up the beat for the title track, which kicks off the album. He begins the first verse by treating himself to the splendors of freedom, rapping, “No probation for the kid, I’m finna face a zip/Riding ’round with the shrooms again, I’m finna take a trip.” Elsewhere, he recruits BLP KOSHER and Certified Trapper for “3 Stooges,” a decidedly swagged-out update on the classic tale of goofballs gone wild.
