A member of the group Los Ninos Rebeldes, singer-songwriter Camilo won the Colombian youth talent competition El Factor Xs in 2007.

∙ “Desconocidos,” his 2008 breakthrough single, featured his future brothers-in-law Mau y Ricky, as well as Manuel Turizo.
∙ Camilo enjoyed a second career in television, making appearances on Colombian telenovelas and the children’s program Bichos before returning to music full time in 2014.
∙ A prolific songwriter, he’s cowritten tracks for Juanes (“Pa Dentro”), Bad Bunny (“Si Estuviésemos Juntos”), and Bomba Estéro (“Ayo”).
∙ Shakira guested on a remix of his 2019 quintuple-Platinum hit, “Tutu,” which also featured Pedro Capó and won Best Pop Song at the 2020 Latin Grammys.
∙ His 2020 LP, Por Primera Vez, topped Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart and was nominated for Best Latin Pop or Urban Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards.

Lending his songwriting talent to hits by the likes of Bad Bunny, Becky G., and Natti Natasha in recent years, it seemed all but certain that Colombian artist Camilo Echeverry would make the transition to spotlighted star. The mustachioed maestro from Montería finally broke out properly with “Tutu,” an enchantingly easygoing vocal collaboration with Puerto Rican singer Pedro Capó that not only caught Shakira’s attention but led to her jumping onto its remix. From the inventive culinary allusions of “Favorito” to the nervous whistles of “Medialuna,” each one bursting with bold romantic declarations, Por Primera Vez supersedes Camilo’s prior teenage releases, establishing him as one of the most worthwhile voices in Latin pop. Not content to stick with any one style, he tries his hand at the regional Mexican sound on “La Mitad”—with none other than Christian Nodal himself by his side.

“The entire album has been written, produced, recorded, and edited by my hands,” Camilo Echeverry tells Apple Music about the inspiration behind his album Mis Manos. “My hands will be playing the guitar and touching the mic at concerts when I sing these songs that have become part of all of our lives.” Boasting one of the most heavenly voices to appear in Latin music of late, the Colombian singer-songwriter emerged from a comfortable place composing hits for others and took center stage with his own single “Tutu.” After receiving a remix nod from no less than Shakira, he has since triumphed through collaborations and his 2020 project Por Primera Vez.

“My hands function as a vehicle to make everything into songs,” he says, cognizant of his musical gifts and the responsibility that comes with them. And with the stylistically mature yet youthfully exploratory pop of Mis Manos, he reveals significant artistic growth and a willingness to break bread with an unexpectedly broad set of collaborators, from the regional Mexican balladry of “Tuyo y Mío” with Los Dos Carnales to the bachata cleverness of “BEBÉ” with El Alfa. Not quite so surprising as those, though no less impactful, is “Machu Picchu,” a riveting romantic duet of self-discovery with his real-life wife Evaluna Montaner. On his own, he proves no less introspective and vulnerable, expressing gratitude amid the disbelief of “Milliones” while nimbly dodging red flags on “Ropa Cara.” “Every day I’m more convinced that God has created me with a purpose and intention, and if I’m created to his image and likeness, all of his inheritance comes in the form of creativity and intuition.”

De Adentro Pa Afuera
“De Adentro Pa Afuera is, without a doubt, the title of this chapter of my life,” Camilo tells Apple Music. The Colombian singer-songwriter behind pop hits for himself and several others experienced a bit of an artistic revelation after stepping out on tour for the first time since the pandemic. “I discovered that the songs that were born from the inside belong to those who are out there,” he says. “That encounter changed my life and inspired many ideas that are now part of this album.”

Leading with “Aeropuerto,” a coyly romantic opener that conjures promises of a spontaneous escapade, the inherently personal new record finds Camilo sharing his feelings in the spirit of that live concert run while preparing for more shows ahead. As the title suggests, he’s mindful of the transition from inside to outside faced by nearly everyone, and expresses that through collaborations with a seemingly disparate set of artists, from Alejandro Sanz to Camila Cabello to Myke Towers. Naturally, he’s gone deeper into genre spaces that overlap or abut pop music, performing música mexicana with Grupo Firme on “Alaska” and soothing his daughter on “Índigo” with Evaluna Monataner. “After being completely hermitic to welcoming our first baby,” he says, “now we pack a suitcase with new songs to go around the world and reunite with La Tribu again.”

One of Latin pop’s most consistently fulfilling practitioners, Camilo has transcended his role as a songwriting secret weapon for others to fully become an artist in his own right. With early hits like “Tutu” and “Vida de Rico” in the rearview, the Colombian singer continues to voraciously indulge in a veritable genre buffet on his fourth album, the aptly named cuatro. His taste for tropical styles comes across repeatedly throughout, beginning with the stormy salsa opener “Gordo” and peaking with the emotional Carín León team-up "Una Vida Pasada.”

Accordions throb over “Misión Imposible” and brass creeps into “No Se Vale,” adding a lushness to the proceedings. No matter what format he chooses, his lyrical gaze almost invariably remains on matters of the heart, be that the gushing sentiments of “Amor de Extranjeros” or the eternal promises of “La Boda.” His status as a balladeer still very much intact, he whispers sweet nothings over acoustic guitar and subtle percussion for "Corazón de Hojalata.”
