With the fanfare they inspire and their prolific outpouring of recorded material, you’d think TOMORROW X TOGETHER (styled as TXT and read as “Tomorrow by Together”) had been around a lot longer than a year. The group’s third EP is an uptempo mini-album co-written by members Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai, meant to uplift listeners in the midst of the global COVID-19 crisis. With five tracks of glossy, ambitious yet uncluttered tunes, they’re successful, from the emo shoegaze of “Ghosting,” the Bruno Mars-esque retro-disco pop of “Blue Hour,” and the pandemic-inspired “We Lost the Summer” (co-written by English pop experimentalist Charli XCX) to the palm-muted pop-rock riffs of “Wishlist,” complete with handclaps and gang vocals—similar to the kind of songwriting that brought One Direction to such great heights in the last decade. The EP is comprehensive without sacrificing panache—a tough line to walk, let alone master, as TXT does here.

minisode 3: TOMORROW

Five years after their debut, TOMORROW X TOGETHER takes the time to reflect back on their journey so far. From a short, Morse-code-only track that calls back to the iconic opening of debut single “CROWN” to a song called “I’ll See You There Tomorrow” to another about connecting with their past selves, minisode 3: TOMORROW is the K-pop quintet’s most self-referential album to date.

Imagined as mini-album interludes between chapters of a larger musical story, TXT’s “minisode” series began with 2020’s minisode1 : Blue Hour, a breezy five-track pop album written during the initial phases of the pandemic that tells the story of a teen boy struggling to ground himself in a changing world. The story got more intense with 2022’s minisode 2: Thursday’s Child, a five-track exploration of the feelings of grief, anger, and denial that can come with someone’s first breakup.

minisode 3: TOMORROW takes as its theme the promises we make to ourselves as we grow. In lead single “Deja Vu,” Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai sing to their past selves, comforting the versions of themselves who first dreamed of success. Designed as an optimistic progression from TXT’s previous release, 2023 studio album The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, minisode 3: TOMORROW is ultimately about finding courage and comfort in an uncertain world: “There’ll be no more sorrow/I’ll see you there tomorrow.” Here is what Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai had to say about each of the tracks:

“I’ll See You There Tomorrow”
Beomgyu: “This song will instantly make you feel better with its catchy chorus melody. I think it really captures the sleek freshness of our sound.”

“Deja Vu”

“Miracle”
HueningKai: “The lyrics on this song are so warm and tender. It’s about how every moment spent with you is like a miracle. It’s also got a moving melody that will get you right in the feels. ❤️”

“The Killa (I Belong to You)”
Soobin: “This is the first track from our hyung line unit. It’s got a sultry, sexy vibe to it.”
Yeonjun: “This groovy track is packed with pure hyungaz sexiness!”

“Quarter Life”
Beomgyu: “This song has great lyrics. The more you pay attention to the words, the more you’ll get into this track.”
Taehyun: “The theme here was to spread consolation and empathy for everyone in our generation today. That sentiment really comes across in the chorus where we’re shouting.”
HueningKai: “The song is about the things we feel—the worries and anxieties—as we hit the quarter mark in our lives. I hope many listeners find it relatable and uplifting.”

“Deja Vu (Anemoia Remix)”
Taehyun: “In this version, we toned down some of the bold flashiness of the original, so that you can focus more on the song’s emotional side. It has its own little charm that I hope many will appreciate.”

The Name Chapter: FREEFALL

When TOMORROW X TOGETHER, aka TXT, debuted in 2019, the five members were usually contextualized as BTS’s hoobaes, aka juniors. At the time, Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai were the only other group at BTS’s agency Big Hit, and there was much expectation for what they would bring to the K-pop scene. While it’s unfair to compare any group to BTS’s culture-shifting legacy, TXT is finding impact in its own way, becoming the first K-pop group to headline Lollapalooza and landing a deal as Dior’s newest brand ambassadors. Where BTS has always led with their love for and appreciation of hip-hop, TXT skews alt-rock; The Name Chapter: FREEFALL, the third studio album from TXT, sees the group further refine their signature sound.

TXT chose “Chasing That Feeling” as the album’s lead single. The New Wave bop explores a dedication to winning back a lost love in separate Korean- and English-language versions: “Didn’t know what I had, did I?/Left it all in the past/Hoping for twice in a lifetime/Is that too much to ask?” The synth-driven structure is slightly reminiscent of debut single “Crown,” though “Chasing That Feeling” is fittingly more mature in both sound and theme—and far more committed to the ’80s— and pairs well with the hypnotic dance-trance track “Deep Down.”

It’s noteworthy that The Name Chapter: FREEFALL’s pre-release singles are English-language collaborations with global artists: the fun, fluffy Jonas Brothers collab “Do It Like That” and the funky “Back for More” with Brazilian singer-songwriter Anitta. If those singles are looking to bring more ears to TXT, pop ballad “Blue Spring” is on the other end of the outreach-aspiration spectrum. The song was written by TXT specifically for fandom MOA (“When we're high, when we're low/You're always by my side”) and was first performed by the group during their Act: Sweet Mirage world tour. It’s a sweet addition to this collection of songs that also nods at the near-constant touring of the group in this era.

TXT indulges their love of rock most explicitly in “Growing Pain,” which blends soaring vocals with a few death-metal growls. But it’s “Skipping Stones” that is perhaps the most characteristically TXT track, bringing a distinctive discordant eeriness to the album. Together, the nine tracks on The Name Chapter: FREEFALL point towards an even brighter future, fully outside of BTS’s shadow.

Lo and behold, TOMORROW X TOGETHER is no longer just Big Hit Entertainment’s junior boy band, living in the shadows of BTS. On the group’s first Japanese full-length album, STILL DREAMING, members Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai rerecorded previously released tracks, a collection of their most ambitious material: from the retro disco of “Blue Hour” from Minisode1 : BLUE HOUR to the digitized vinyl pops and handclaps of the jazzy “Drama” from the Dream Chapter: ETERNITY EP. That these Korean songs could so effortlessly translate to Japanese speaks to the strength of TXT’s idiosyncratic pop—they exist beyond language.

Especially noteworthy are STILL DREAMING’s two Japanese originals: the acoustic guitar balladry of “Everlasting Shine,” which fans may recognize as a theme from Season 4 of the anime Black Clover, and the production-heavy anthem “Force,” which doubles as the opening theme for the second season of another anime, World Trigger. Without any doubt, TXT’s global pervasiveness is nigh—on record, on television, everywhere.
