When he was in high school, 17-year-old corrido singer-songwriter Junior H self-recorded his demo album, Mi Vida En Un Cigarro.

Between his early corridos tumbados collaborations and the twin 2020 breakout albums Cruisin’ With Junior H and MUSICA, Junior H proved a harbinger of the coming sad sierreño wave. Three years after showcasing seminal songs like “No Me Pesa” and “Mente Positiva,” he’s now an influential and formidable force in música mexicana. Still, prior to the arrival of $AD BOYZ 4 LIFE II, 2023 had been uncharacteristically quiet for an artist known for dropping as many as three projects in a single year, in addition to singles.

Thankfully, this 17-track outing sees the diligence of his studio time paying off with one of the most consistent sets in his discography to date. Unlike the 2021 installment, this sequel goes without guests to present his somber voice against arrangements that amplify and elevate his oft-melancholic delivery. This makes the tearful lows of “OTRO AMOR” and “Y LLORO” all the more grave and impactful, his lyrical preoccupation with matters of the heart as focused as ever. Few could make misery sound this melodic.

Early fans of Junior H and his signature brand of sad-boy corridos will recall Mi Vida En Un Cigarro, a nine-song introduction to the young singer. Since then, he’s gone on to become one of the brightest stars in his burgeoning corner of contemporary música mexicana alongside others within and beyond the Rancho Humilde sphere of influence. For this welcome sequel to his debut, he presents 21 tracks, which more than doubles the length of its predecessor and is substantially longer than newer fan favorites Cruisin With Junior H and MUSICA. Though collaborations with Eslabon Armado on “Pa' Que Te Duela” and Luis R Conriquez on “Los Botones Azules” will no doubt excite devotees of the genre, Mi Vida En Un Cigarro 2 largely showcases him in solo mode, delivering future fan favorites like “Como Jordan” and “Esta Vida.”

Cruisin' with Junior H
Having first come to the attention of a new generation of música Mexicana fans with 2019’s “Ella,” his Corridos Tumbados duet with Natanael Cano, this young singer from Guanajuato dropped the brief yet potent Atrapado en un Sueño months later. Yet that 2020 EP from Junior H served essentially as a teaser for two simultaneously released albums that came right at the tail end of summer, MUSICA and this exceptional 12-song effort. An often melancholic showcase marked by deep, emotive vocals, Cruisin’ With Junior H sets the tone for what’s to come with its devastating “Intro” and the immersive “No Me Pesa.” On standout “La Vi Llorar,” he captures the sting of a relationship on the verge of collapse, the tears falling like rain.

Self-proclaimed sadboi Junior H came into his own not long after partnering with corridos tumbados kingpin Natanael Cano. Part of the Rancho Humilde stable of artists, the young singer from Guanajuato has since transcended to become a scene leader in his own right by cultivating a style that borrows elements from trap while maintaining a personal melancholy. Released simultaneously with Cruisin’ With Junior H, this complementary 12-song effort further unspools his summertime sadness with sincerity. Whether rebuffing the fair-weather types on “No Cap” or mourning a former love on “Días Nublados,” he remains true to himself and his artistic vision. Though the album’s cloudiest moments are where his talents shine brightest, he nonetheless retains an ability to get lost in the thrall of romance, with lustful urges and head-over-heels sentiments defining the ballad “Psicodélica.”

An emerging star of the Rancho Humilde stable, Junior H made a strong impression on the Corridos Tumbados compilation. The fresh-faced Guanajuato-bred singer’s first project since that game-changing Halloween 2019 release, Atrapado en un Sueño constitutes another must-hear recording from the burgeoning regional urbano movement. The title track opens things in a dreamlike haze, while “Mente Positiva” finds him clear-headed and determined to take care of himself lest he be taken out. The toughness of corridos like “Pakas en las Rakas” gives him credibility, yet more nuanced numbers like “Si Mañana”—which happens to feature an uncredited Cano—add greater emotional heft to his songcraft.

Though his breakout moments came courtesy of the corridos tumbados king Natanael Cano, the Guanajuato-bred Junior H spent much of 2020 making a name for himself on his own terms. The oft moody and brooding songs across Atrapado en un Sueño, Cruisin’ With Junior H, and MUSICA earned him a fanbase more than receptive to his profoundly affecting and emotive variant of the popular new wave of regional Mexican music. $ad Boyz 4 Life, a 75-minute journey deep into his sonic universe, is marked by a captivating interplay of singer and musicians, and permeated with a certain sadness.

The opening title track sets a tone that carries throughout the record, his distinctly forbidding voice guiding listeners through relatable experiences with a painful sense of knowing. The fatalistic longing he shares on “La Bestia” leaves devastation in its wake, its earnest confessions of love coming too late and in vain. Collaborations are scarce but substantial, with the Marca MP team-up “El Velador” and generational peer Ed Maverick joining for “Por Dentro.” While he successfully reunites here with some of the same skilled songwriters from his prior projects, the album’s most striking moments generally come from those penned by himself, further securing him a future as one of the genre’s most compelling young artists.

Following the success of his 2019 debut, Mi Vida En un Cigarro, Junior H gained a massive international following. Chief among his new fans was record executive Jimmy Humilde of L.A. label Rancho Humilde, who quickly signed the meteoric lo-fi corridos star and introduced him to the imprint's other blockbuster discovery, Natanael Cano. Later that year, Humilde formally inaugurated the era of corridos tumbados with a stacked compilation of the same name, showcasing the label's growing roster, which also included Dan Sanchez and Nueva Era. Throughout the album's 21-track run, each artist showcased their fresh take on corridos and their hallowed Mexican storytelling traditions; pairing up intermittently and running the gamut of gangster boisterousness and sadboi introspection. This album helped consolidate Junior H as a genre standard bearer, both on the back of his buzzy, malevolent collaboration with Natanael Cano on “Disfruto Lo Malo” and the romantic longing of his standalone smash “Ella.”

So by the time 2020 rolled around, and with it Junior H's sophomore album Atrapado en un Sueño (Deluxe), the downcast crooner was very much living his wildest dreams. He'd been anointed the heir to Ariel Camacho's sad sierreño legacy and his songs were blasting from every other passing car. As the album's Grand Theft Auto-inspired cover suggests, Junior H and his peers had successfully led a heist on a once orthodox genre, terraforming the industry around it and tailoring their songwriting to a generation of young, online, and omnivorous fans.

This upswing in Junior H's life and career is captured on “Me Siento” and “Mente Positiva,” where he muses on getting that proverbial bread and the girls on whom he plans to spend it. On the title track and “Dicen,” he examines both sides of the fame coin; at first, incredulous of the good fortune that led him to the top of the charts, and later, unpacking the envy and ire he inspired in former friends and colleagues.

Junior H also pivots from the moodier tone of his debut and finds his fighting spirit on Atrapado en un Sueño (Deluxe), in no small measure fortified by his multiple collaborations with Natanael Cano. This influence is most notable on the street dealings of “Pakas en las Rakas,” while the pair teams up once again on “Si Mañana” to ponder the high mortality of artists working in an industry with deep ties to organized crime. Though odes to the 4/20 way of life abound, the album is sobering in its maturity and stellar production—consolidating Junior H as a corridos powerhouse and setting the stage for his genre-bending next chapter.

After canvassing lo-fi sierreño on his debut, Mi Vida En un Cigarro (2019), mainstreaming corridos tumbados alongside Natanael Cano and Ovi on Las 3 Torres (2020), and rocketing to the top of Apple Music's Latin Album charts with $ad Boyz 4 Life (2021), Junior H faced the conundrum of where to go next. After starting 2022 with Mi Vida En Un Cigarro 2 he closed the year with Contingente, a project that in the opening track, “Índice,” he confides took two years to create and that he wasn't sure he'd ever release. However, the end result was too exciting to shelve.
For years corridos tumbados were also described as trap corridos due to the many parallels in cadence and street narratives shared with the realm of hip-hop. On Contingente, those influences become explicit as Junior H trades dueling guitars and bajo sextos for throbbing digital beats, diving head first into trap, reggaetón, and house music. The title track steps boldly into perreo romántico while the hedonistic club sounds of “Tus Besox” shatter any expectations of acoustic cowboy tunes.
An album of epic sonic ambitions deserves an equally epic guest list, and Junior H pulled no punches on the invitations. Mexican trap titan Alemán drops by for yearning slow-burner “Vete Ya.” Chilean reggaetón star Paloma Mami pops up on “Veneno,” a slinky, percussive duet unspooling poisonous yet addictive romances. And on the seductive “Cologne,” labelmate Ovi shows up for a fast-rapping assist over sinewy R&B basslines. Of course, this wouldn't be a Junior H joint without some sober introspection, and “Te Alejaste” with Snow Tha Product is a contemplative study of a crumbling relationship.
Junior H's seventh solo outing, Contingente, is not only a departure from the lo-fi guitar sounds that captivated audiences back in 2019 but also innovative legacy work from one of the architects of modern música mexicana.
