Mychael Danna

Artist ∙ Soundtrack

Precise, complex, and full of emotional tension, Mychael Danna’s music has greatly enhanced the power of a wide array of films and TV shows. Born in 1958 and raised in Toronto, Danna studied music composition and developed interests in non-Western musical modes and electronic minimalism before beginning his long collaboration with Canadian director Atom Egoyan in the late ‘80s. His eerie yet elegant scores for Egoyan hits like 1994’s Exotica and 1997’s The Sweet Hereafter led to equally acclaimed work for such filmmakers as Terry Gilliam and Ang Lee—the latter’s Life Of Pi (2012) was an enthralling showcase for Danna’s music. A versatile composer, Danna has continually expanded his stylistic palette, including his deft incorporation of Afghan music traditions in the score for 2017’s The Breadwinner, one of many collaborations with his composer brother, Jeff Danna.
