Greatest Hits

Album ∙ Rock ∙ 2000

Though Lenny Kravitz works on his studio albums as seriously as his heroes—Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles—worked on theirs, his bestselling album to date in 2000 (much like his heroes’) turned out to be his Greatest Hits set. Considering the firepower and general exposure level of his singles, it’s not surprising to see him appealing to both hardcore and casual music fans. Songs like “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” “Fly Away,” “Let Love Rule,” “I Belong to You,” and the at-the-time previously unreleased “Again” got stuck in listeners’ brains and demanded replay. Kravitz’s retro-yet-futuristic pop-soul-funk gave the airwaves something new while retaining the flavor of favorite styles of yesteryear. People like to dance, and they like to rock, and they even enjoy larger-than-life figures who make the rock-star lifestyle look like mischievous fun, even if it really is hard, hard work. In terms of a soundtrack for the '90s, this Greatest Hits collection surely hits the mark.
