The Real World, Vol. 3

Album ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap ∙ 2010

Coming out of West Oakland and the Cypress Village projects, J Stalin is a fast-rising player in the Bay Area scene. After getting his start with Cali O.G. Richie Rich, he has since worked with just about every Bay artist you can think of, including E-40, Keak Da Sneak, San Quinn, the Team, Luniz, and Frontline. He is a businessman (Town Thizzness, Livewire Records), heads the crew Livewire Gang, and is absolutely prolific in the studio, releasing some two-dozen albums and mixtapes just between 2006 and 2010 alone. His music is rowdy, rambunctious, and full of grimy details about life in the hood, set to West-centric production heavy on the slap. Less hyphy-ed out than some of his earlier work, The Real World 3 is mellower on the beats, (lots of '80s R&B loops in the mix) but still boasts his raw lyricism and stylized flow. Lots of great stuff on here, but "Who Are You," "Banga Dance 2010," and "Still Thuggin'" are highlights.
