Sunshine Superman

Album ∙ Pop ∙ 1966

Sunshine Superman marks the opening of Donovan’s psychedelic period—and, boy, did he come out with his kaleidoscopes a-twirling. The anchors are the title cut, one of the era’s most imaginative high-key pop anthems, and “Season of the Witch,” a minimalist bluesy workout featuring a young Jimmy Page’s distinctively droning fretwork. The medieval-sounding “Guinevere” and “Legend of a Girl Child Linda” reflect Donovan’s charming knack for Arthurian whimsy over sonic wizard Mickie Most’s rich, ageless production. This superman soars.
