What Is Life

Album ∙ Dance ∙ 2024

Anti Up (Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo) make dance music that pulses with the defiant spirit of rebellion and the allure of hedonism. The British producers wrote their debut album, What Is Life, with dark rooms in mind, drawing inspiration from the underground clubs and sounds that shaped their youth—where the dance floor became the ultimate escape.

Punk energy surges throughout the record, as they gleefully tear down the drudgery of the nine-to-five on the bass-heavy “The Weekend”; rouse a rallying cry to “get down with the movement” over an old-school, funky beat on “Revolution”; and take pride in disrupting the order on “Outlaws,” where guitar riffs and laser synths collide in a frenetic storm. Elsewhere, debauchery takes over in the sex-fueled tech house of “Freaky Feed Me” and the high-speed techno delirium of “Do You Know Where Your Children Are.” From their dark rooms, Anti Up invites existential reflection on the title track, delivering answers to “What is life?” that are as playful as they are profound: “Life is a bed of roses/Life is a party full of posers/Life is a drug, don’t overdose it.”
