Lucienne Renaudin Vary, born in 1999, was just eight when she enrolled to study classical trumpet and jazz at the Le Mans Conservatoire. The twin sides of her musical nature have since developed in tandem to support jaw-dropping virtuosity and one of the most beautiful trumpet sounds on offer this side of Heaven. Vary’s affection for four repertoire landmarks radiates through her latest album. She makes a compelling case for Neruda’s Trumpet Concerto, supplementing melodies originally written for the valveless horn with elegantly crafted cadenzas, and mines the trumpet’s vocal qualities in well-known pieces by Haydn and Hummel. Her seductive reading of Alexander Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto combines fiery passion and tender lyricism, qualities multiplied tenfold in a wicked, all-brass arrangement of the Concerto for Trumpet by bandleader Harry James.
