“This is the first time I did a set entirely of Larry Levan’s music,” Kenny Dope tells Apple Music. “I listened back to the mix thinking, ‘This is the foundation of what I do: the style, the sound, the mixes, everything.’” It’s a special lineage to be a part of. The world knows Dope as one half of the legendary house music duo Masters at Work, but would there be a Kenny Dope if not for Larry Levan? It’s impossible to say, but few people have the connection to Levan’s work that Dope does. Dope went from fan to peer to official remixer—as part of Masters at Work—of some of Levan’s most notorious West End Records releases. Levan’s music, which Dope has spent plenty of time de- and reconstructing, is something the DJ and producer marvels at even today. “Larry was a master at arrangements and effects and EQing,” Dope says. “I still go nuts at the fact that when I played ‘Heartbeat’ by Taana Gardner—the drums that we know, the break and all, are not on the reel! My idea [for this mix] was to go through a bunch of his remixes, from downtempo R&B to uptempo disco, to show how versatile he was and how incredible his ear was. I’m taking you on a Larry Levan journey.”
