Cherise Gary is known in the scene as the queen of Jersey club, the bouncy, rambunctious party music that sprung out of Newark in the ’90s. But it’s Heartbeats that officially marks her coronation. The six-song EP brings Jersey club as close to pop as possible without sacrificing its rawness; amid the genre’s signature vocal chops and bed-squeak samples, the producer and vocalist lets it all out on the subjects of love, lust, and heartbreak, most transcendently on “Microdosing,” a swirling, thumping diva house anthem. It’s DJ Rashad’s Double Cup for Jersey club—a record that takes its genre to the next level while inviting newcomers to join the party.
