Rise Again

Album ∙ R&B/Soul ∙ 2014

Lira is well established as a major singing star in her home country of South Africa, as well as in Europe. Armed with a blend of smooth jazz, light R&B, and pop, she seems poised to reach the same audience that embraced Sade and other modern vocalists like Alicia Keys, Cher, and Celine Dion. Sounding like a natural for the sultry Buddha-Bar compilations, the jazzy remix of the hit “Feel Good” kicks things off in sexy fashion. “Typical” eases into R&B, with dreamy electric keyboards and soulful guitar pushing her to the album's strongest vocal performance. She also shows range on this set of originals, downshifting to ballads like “Believer,” adding a reggae lilt on “Valley of Darkness,” and going gospel on “Something Inside So Strong.” She stands most apart from her well-coiffed singing sisters on “Ixesha” and “Hamba,” where she sings in her native tongue and incorporates elements of South African choral music. While not an official debut, this certainly acts as a well-thought-out overview that should add to her sizable global following.
