Daryl Hall & John Oates’ return to the Troubadour in May of 2008 was a triumph for the long-running duo. The band’s music enjoyed a renaissance in the ‘90s and ‘00s, when a younger generation began to acknowledge their accomplishments. Though the duo had always been studio wizards, Live At the Troubadour emphasizes their songwriting skills. The performance is understated, featuring Hall and Oates on piano and acoustic guitar backed by a politely pared-down band. These renditions underscore the duo’s sense of sweetened soul, especially in “It’s Uncanny,” “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone,” “One On One,” “Rich Girl” and “Abandoned Luncheonette.” While the setting brings out the best in the band’s oldest songs (they last performed at the Troubadour in 1973, as an opening act), 2002’s “Getaway Car” fits easily into the proceedings. Even the band’s famous ‘80s hits (“Maneater,” “Kiss On My List,” “Private Eyes”) are played smooth, with newfound calm and self-assurance. Hall & Oates are obviously at ease with their unique legacy, and 40 years after starting a friendship the duo plays their back catalog with matured grace.
