The Prelude - EP

Album ∙ R&B/Soul ∙ 2020

Acoustic instrumentation once ruled the music of Pink Sweat$. His Volume 1 and Volume 2 EPs were stripped-back affairs that allowed his silky voice to take center stage. On The Prelude, the Philadelphia singer-songwriter expands into lush disco-pop—the kind that sounds like bottled sunshine and new love. “Give It to Me,” the EP’s orchestral opening track, announces the transformation, as groovy as it is flirtatious and a sonic departure that suits Pink Sweat$'s artistic inclinations (and his rosy aesthetic) well. Colorful maximalism continues into “Icy,” its ’80s references worn proudly, and “Not Alright,” which showcases his dazzling falsetto amid swirling cinematic production. The back half takes a slight pivot to offer a bridge between his two worlds: adorned acoustic arrangements that feel at once fleshed out and delicately dreamy. Here is where Pink Sweat$’s old-soul lyricism shines brightest. “At My Worst” is a plea for companionship that outlasts any trials, while the gorgeous standout “17” unfolds like the sweetest love letter or a wedding song; “Lows” is a pledge of unconditional devotion. His are the kind of love songs that feel familiar and aspirational, retaining a certain doe-eyed innocence—free of hubris and complication.
