Jesus Piece (Deluxe Version)

Album ∙ Hip-Hop/Rap ∙ 2012

Game’s 2011 full-length, The R.E.D. Album, found the Compton rapper reuniting with mentor (and executive producer) Dr. Dre. For his fifth studio album, Jesus Piece, the venomous verbalist teams with executive producers Cool & Dre and bullies beats with chilling, often-violent stories (“Dead People,” “See No Evil” feat. Kendrick Lamar and Tank, “Scared Now” feat. Meek Mill). Sprinkled amid clever wordplay and an impressive guestlist—including Chris Brown, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa, and Lil Wayne on “Celebration," plus Big Sean, Fabolous, and Lil Wayne on the D’Angelo-sampling swinger “All That (Lady)”—Game repeatedly touches on themes of church and God. This is best realized on the title track (assisted by Kanye and Common) and the hypnotic “Can’t Get Right,” where Game confesses his sins and references his influences—ranging from Jay-Z and Nas to Biggie and Tupac—yet ultimately anoints himself the king of hip-hop.
