Larry Hernandez is the controversial master of the narcocorrido—songs of the Mexican criminal underground delivered in regional folk settings. On a tune like "Rey Midas," about a high-living drug kingpin, the lively accordion and snare drum match the character's bravado. On "El Ejecutor," the edge of menace in his voice stands in marked contrast to the tune’s lilting feel. Hernandez often couches his hardest-hitting words in jaunty, horn-driven arrangements, notably on "Lista Negra," about those on the wrong side of organized crime.
